What is Healing Hearts?

  • Healing Hearts is a community outreach program sponsored by LoveyLoaves Rescue to help treat select heartworm positive dogs within Orange County Animal Services by covering the cost of treatment after adoption.
  • This will increase the adoptability of a heartworm positive dog.
  • 1 in 10 dogs come into Orange County Animal Services with heartworm disease.
  • Due to costly treatment, these dogs are less likely to be adopted and more likely to be euthanized through no fault of their own.
  • This will ultimately save more lives.

The Healing Hearts Process At A Glance

  • Browse the Orange County Animal Services kennels to find your new family member.
  • Heartworm positive dogs selected to participate in the Healing Hearts program are noted with an official sponsorship sign placed on their kennel.
  • The dog is adopted and leaves the shelter to their new forever home!
  • A Healing Hearts representative will contact the family to set up treatment.
  • Treatment is provided by a network of preselected Central Florida veterinary offices.
  • Treatment is paid for by Healing Hearts. You just provide the tender, loving, care, and love your new family member back to health.
  • Once the dog has completed treatment, continue with monthly preventative to ensure your dog remains heartworm-free for life.

What is Heartworm Disease?

  • Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal disease in pets. It is caused by foot-long worms that live in the heart, lungs, and associated blood vessels of affected pets, causing severe lung disease, heart failure, and damage to other organs in the body.
  • If untreated, heartworms that live inside a dog mature into adults, mate, and produce offspring greatly increasing their numbers. Heartworm disease causes lasting damage to the heart, lungs, and arteries, and can affect the dog’s health and quality of life long after the parasites are gone.
